Cats Nearing Loan Deal for McCormack

SUNDERLAND are leading the race to land Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack on loan - but the deal hinges on how much of his wages the Black Cats are prepared to pay.

Manager Simon Grayson worked with McCormack at Leeds United and the Scot was one of the first transfer targets he identified when he took over on Wearside.

Sunderland's transfer budget means a permanent move is not an option, but they are keen to take the 30-year-old on loan.

McCormack is also believed to be keen on a reunion with Grayson and a move to Sunderland, but the clubs remain in talks over the proportion of his salary the Black Cats will pick up.

ChronicleLive understands a deal looks likely but Grayson said yesterday - aside from free agent goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter who is set to sign in the next 24 hours - it is unlikely there would be any other additions ahead of Friday's opener at home to Derby County.

Grayson signed McCormack for Leeds from Cardiff City in 2010.

He spent four years at Elland Road before joining Fulham for PS11m in 2014. …
