FAMILIES are in for a big treat today - delivered by the world's smallest ice cream van.

The pint-size Nice Cream Van - just 47 inches long - has just been unveiled and is now touring the country whipping up interest as it goes.

Today will see it stop off in Gateshead to give out free ice cream - and it certainly won't have any trouble finding a parking space.

The tiny vehicle, which is 39 inches high and has a maximum speed of 12mph, is out to make a big impact when it arrives on Tyneside for its visit to intu Metrocentre - which will be followed by a trip to Newcastle's intu Eldon Square on Monday.

Inviting customers to "stoop for a scoop", it promises to be a hit with shoppers and schoolchildren enjoying their summer holiday.

The van was created in the wake of research which revealed that eating ice cream ranks as the number four thing that make people in the North East happy in the summer. …
