Lorna MacDonald, owner of Raintree Restaurant and a board member for the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine, has been awarded the Gus Craig Award by The Salvation Army of St. Augustine.

MacDonald provides cuisine for the Limelight Gala and for a special opening night event for each new season. She is a community volunteer and philanthropist, serving as former president and on the board of EPIC Behavioral Healthcare and as founding president of the St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association.

The Gus Craig Award recognizes longtime residents who have contributed to the community and upheld the ideas and morals of The Salvation Army, giving selflessly to others. The award is named after A.H. "Gus" Craig Jr., past owner of Craig Funeral Home, who was a big supporter of many local causes and organizations.

- Celebrities and high school all-stars competed in a Jacksonville HELPS (Homeless Students Empowered through Leadership, Partnership & Service) Celebrity Basketball Game to benefit the Duval County Homeless Education Department. The High School All-Star team, comprised of players from Raines, Ribault, Jackson and Englewood, coached by former Mayor Alvin Brown, won 61-54. Celebrities included TV personalities, city officials and community leaders, who are now 0-3 against the high school all-stars.

- The Sulzbacher Center has received a $20,000 grant from the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation. Funds will assist the center in restoring hope and self-sufficiency to those experiencing homelessness in Jacksonville through supportive services and housing assistance. The center is experiencing increased demands for service due to children being out of school. Also, summer is the most difficult time to raise money for all nonprofits.

- First Coast No More Homeless Pets has received an $80,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support two Mega Adoption events in 2017. The adoption events are held to encourage area residents to bring cats and dogs into their homes and help local shelters retain their No-Kill status.
