TRIBUTES have been paid to a "giant of the pub industry" and leading Teesside business figure who has died at the age of 69.

'Mr Pubmaster' John Sands, who lived at Wynyard, was former boss of Camerons Brewery and the UK's largest private-tenanted pub company Pubmaster and a "true champion of the British pub".

He died on Monday at the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton after fighting a 16-month battle with cancer.

Family, friends and colleagues have paid tribute to the "outstanding leader" and "devoted family man" for his integrity, wisdom and "fairness to the prosperity of everyone".

John was a former managing director at Camerons in Hartlepool after being headhunted in 1980 by brewers JW Cameron, becoming managing director five years later.

He also co-founded Wear Inns in 2006, which owns pubs across the North-East and Yorkshire - and was a North East Business Executive of the Year. His family said: "It is with deep regret and terrible sadness that John passed away on Monday.

"John accepted his illness with typical stoicism and strength.

"He will be terribly missed by his family and his many friends."

John's long-standing former operations director at Pubmaster, Richard Gundry, said: "John liked pubs, he was never happier than sitting with a pint. He was an outstanding leader, a remarkable businessman, and a great friend. I'll miss having that pint and laughing together."
