FORMER Coventry City captain Sam Ricketts has backed Adam Armstrong to have a successful loan spell with Bolton Wanderers.

Ricketts was Armstrong's captain when the 20-year-old Newcastle United star scored 20 goals for Coventry in League One during the 2015/16 season.

His form earned him a new three-year deal at the Magpies last summer, but he could only bag six goals during a loan spell with Barnsley last season.

After a summer where he won the World Cup with England under-20s, Armstrong is now at Bolton until January and is keen to prove his worth in the Championship.

And former Wales international Ricketts is confident he will prove a 'great coup' for the Trotters.

He told the Bolton News: "Adam is definitely capable of scoring plenty of goals in that division if he can get a run of games and get that confidence going.

"He played at Barnsley last season and seemed to do OK.

"I don't think he really got the chances to show what he can do, or a run in the team in a position he was comfortable in. …
