AMONG the faces of the vile Operation Shelter convicts one individual stands out.

Shaven-headed Carolann Gallon, a young woman from Newcastle, was embroiled in a conspiracy to groom and exploit women and girls - some not much younger than herself, alongside 17 men, all of whom were older than her and all of Asian extraction.

The 22-year-old admitted three offences of trafficking girls for the purposes of sexual exploitation, as part of the Shelter trials which can now be reported.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Gallon, from Hareside Court in Newburn, was aged 17 or 18 at the time of the offences.

While the local Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) took the decision to prosecute the men, it was the organisations top law officer Alison Saunders, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), that decided Gallon should also be charged.

Northumbria Police's Chief Constable, Steve Ashman, said the decision was taken after the DPP became satisfied that Gallon was involved in the criminality, and not a victim herself. …
