De Roon Opens Up on Splits in the Boro Squad

FORMER Boro midfielder Marten de Roon says his single season in England "wasn't a fun year" - claiming there was a "split" in the squad. Less than a week after returning to Italy to rejoin former club Atalanta, the Dutch midfielder has taken a swipe as he reflected on his year at Boro, saying: "We weren't a close team and we didn't grow together".

The 26-year-old reckons the Premier League is "about power" and says he missed the tactical discipline he'd become accustomed to while playing in Italy.

And he's also revealed he believed he would have been kissing goodbye to his chances of an international call-up had he stayed with Boro in the Championship.

In an interview with reputable Dutch news outlet AD, de Roon said: "To watch, the Premier League is great because a lot happens. The speed and intensity played are not comparable with any other competition.

"But I missed the tactical discipline. Everything is about power. Outside the top six, tactical ingenuity fell. I like to think about football to defeat an opponent."

As he looked back on his year with Boro, de Roon echoed some comments from his former teammates in saying there was a divide in the dressing room last season.

He said: "It was not a fun year. There was a split in the group between Spanish and English speaking boys. …
