Jail Nurse Took 'Spice' into Prison

A FORMER prison nurse has been locked up at the age of 68 after she was caught taking a package of the drug "spice" into Holme House jail.

A Teesside judge sounded a stern warning about taking the psychoactive drug into prison as he sent Elsie Watson away with her reputation in ruins for her baffling first crime.

Watson, who had been a psychiatric nurse at Durham Prison, was caught with 3.28g of the psychoactive drug as she visited her grandson at the Stockton jail.

Judge Stephen Ashurst told her: "No court relishes having to consider sending someone of your age and with your background to prison.

"I have a wider duty, however, to reflect on behalf of the community that those who take dangerous psychoactive substances into prison must expect to lose their liberty.

"The court has to, I'm afraid, send a deterrent message.

"I'm passing what I regard as the absolute minimum sentence that I could legitimately pass in a case as serious as this," he added, jailing Watson for six months.

She was spotted acting suspiciously and caught with the package of drugs in her hand, said prosecutor Emma Atkinson yesterday.

She told police she came across a man in the visitor centre who passed her the package and said: "It'll be OK if you drop this in the canteen. …
