SOUTH Shields centre-back Dillon Morse is targeting a place in the club's history books after they secured a place in the FA Cup's first qualifying round.

Goals from Luke Sullivan, Matty Pattison and Gavin Cogdon ensured the Mariners saw off a hard-working Bridlington Town 3-1. After playing his part in a solid defensive display, Morse hopes his side can go even further in the competition.

The defender said: "It stops with the club forever doesn't it? "It goes into the history books so it would be great to have a good cup run this season.

" Last season we went out early so we want to have a good run in the FA Cup this time round."

South Shields were tested by their Northern Counties East League opponents.

Luke Sullivan's first competitive goal for the Mariners put them ahead before half-time.

Bridlington equalised via Benn Lewis' deflected effort 10 minutes after the break.

However, a sublime curling effort from Matty Pattison restored the lead with 20 minutes to go and the killer strike came in injury time.

As Bridlington goalkeeper James Hitchcock pushed forward for a corner, the Mariners hit them on the break and the returning Gavin Cogdon sealed the win with a simple tap-in.

Morse admitted his side had been severely tested by Curtis Woodhouse's side.

He added: "It was a really tough game against a very physical side.

"We had plenty of chances in the first half to kill the game off but we didn't take them. It was a tough test."

Newcastle Benfield pulled off an FA Cup upset as they secured a 2-1 success at Evo-Stik League club Goole.

Benfield came back from a goal down as John Campbell and Paul Brayson struck to put them into the first qualifying round.

There was a notable draw for Marske United as they earned another crack at higher opposition with a 1-1 at Scarborough.

Sunderland RCA dumped Ashington out of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win on Wearside. …
