WHEN I have a minute to stop and breathe, I'll introduce myself properly as the new editor at The Observer.

In the meantime I'll continue on the biggest learning curve my brain is capable of handling.

It's not the big stuff, that's second nature.

It's all those little details, like where does the shipping news come from and where do I find Greg Bray's column?

But clearly the powers that be have great faith in me, dropping me in the deep end from this Wednesday, without a deputy editor and without two of our most experienced reporters, all taking a well-earned break.

A day in the life of a journalist is relentless at the best of times and I can only take my hat off to the commitment of the staff here, who have gone above and beyond without a second thought.

I am looking forward to next week when we have a full team on board and I can get out and start meeting as many of you as possible. …
