JONAS B Andersen was heralded as the hitherto unsung hero as Redcar kept their play-off hopes alive with a vital 52-41 win over fellow top four chasing Edinburgh.

The Scottish side remain ahead of the SG Petch Bears in the Championship table but team boss Jitendra Duffill emphasised that his side are doing everything asked of them at this stage of their late chase for honours.

"It was a must-win and we are keeping the pressure on Edinburgh," stressed Duffill, who has targeted the Monarchs as the most likely side to stumble on the run-in.

Skipper Ben Barker led the way with another determined 11-point haul but it was Andersen, so often overshadowed by the top three in the Bears averages, who paved the way for the vital victory by dropping just a point in his last three rides.

The Teessiders had seen an early 12-point advantage whittled away to just five by a successful double points-scoring tactical ride from Ricky Wells in heat 7. But the quietly spoken yet so explosive on the track Dane produced one of the most courageous rides of the season in heat 9 to beat Monarchs' reigning World Longtrack Champion Erik Riss and help take the lead over the crucial six-point mark, whereby the losers do not get a bonus point.

Riss used the full width of the Media Prima Arena track to try to prevent Andersen blasting around the outside on the pit bend but to no avail and Duffill continued: "Jonas was outstanding and I think his 'rider of the night' award was totally justified.

"His heat nine win was exceptional as I felt Riss maybe took him a little too wide but he was very brave and just kept going."

Apart from being squeezed out and running a last in heat 5 - Edinburgh's only maximum race advantage of the night - Andersen dropped just one point to an opponent, when just unable to catch Monarchs top scorer Wells in the final race. …
