Three Jacksonville residents were surprised Tuesday with the announcement that they will each receive a much needed new roof from Reliant Roofing.

Every Shingle Heart was organized to help a family in need in the Jacksonville community. Once the nominations started to come in, it was clear to company president Cameron Shouppe and CEO Sean Shapiro that choosing just one family was not an option.

The finalists attended the event thinking they were getting an orientation for the second phase of the roof giveaway. Instead, they were told that all three families would win new roofs. Here are their stories:

Angela Billings was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2014. She was told she would need three surgeries. She went through the double mastectomy, and 10 days after her release from the hospital her fiance of five years died. He was misdiagnosed and by the time they figured out the issue, it was too late.

Then, as a result of Hurricane Matthew, she had leaks from her 20-year old roof in three different places, and used buckets and pots to catch the water. She had a man patch what he could, but a new leak started in the kitchen area a couple of days before the Every Shingle Heart announcement.

Toni Luther was nominated by her daughter, Tina Velazquez. Luther recently had a stroke and could not work. Her only income is Social Security. Luther's roof was severely damaged by Hurricane Matthew.. She applied for aid with the Federal Emergency Management Agency but her request was denied. Tina is a disabled veteran who moved from Puerto Rico to help take care of her mother but is on limited funds and is doing her best to help.

Ruby McMullan was nominated by her friend, Teresa. McMullan is in serious need of a new roof but is on Social Security disability and cannot afford one without taking out a loan. She is barely able to pay her bills and often goes without food to make sure she is able to pay on time. She had to renew her insurance last month and was told she would need to get her roof replaced within the year.
