CARTERSVILLE, GA. | Riley Smith had tears in his eyes. The reaction to how Saturday night's football game ended was initially too much for the Bartram Trail senior quarterback.

But the fact the game was decided on the final play was just as much a testament to the Bears as what the scoreboard reflected. Bartram Trail overcame a four-touchdown deficit only to fall to Cartersville 52-45 in a game that was delayed by more than an hour and a half by lightning.

Bad weather meant a game that was supposed to be played exclusively on ESPN2 was split between ESPN2 and ESPNews. Bartram Trail (0-1) had an opportunity to tie the score with three seconds remaining and the ball on the Cartersville 12-yard line. The Purple Hurricanes (2-0) blitzed and put enough pressure on the Bears quarterback that he could not deliver the ball before being enveloped by purple jerseys.

The pass wobbled to the field, incomplete, and the No. 1 team in Georgia's Class AAAA escaped with a win closer than any of the previous 31 others in its winning streak. …
