SUNDERLAND'S youngsters were well beaten 3-1 by a vastly superior Scunthorpe United side in their opening Checkatrade Trophy group game.

Kevin van Veen headed the League One side in front inside the first five minutes at Glanford Park, Duane Holmes adding a second in first-half injury-time.

Sunderland can consider themselves fortunate not to have been four or five down by the interval, goalkeeper James Talbot just about keeping them in the game.

Rees Greenwood pulled a goal back midway through the second half to give the Wearsiders hope.

However, substitute Josh Morris scored at the death to ensure the scoreline better reflected the hosts' dominance of this Northern Section Group H game.

With Simon Grayson and his assistant Glynn Snodin watching from the stands, Robbie Stockdale took charge of the young Black Cats.

He included four first-teamers in his starting XI, with Adam Matthews, Donald Love and Lynden Gooch given game-time, while Jack Rodwell returned after illness.

Sunderland made the worst possible start, conceding with less than three minutes gone.

A speculative long-range effort from Adelakun was saved by Talbot diving to his right - but he could only push the ball up into the air and van Veen followed up to nod home from virtually on the goalline.

Scunthorpe were firmly in control of the game as Talbot was called upon to save with his feet from Adelakun inside the first 10 minutes. Things became worse for Sunderland when midfielder Ethan Robson was forced off midway through the half after a nasty clash of heads with Devonte Redmond left him in need of lengthy treatment, Owen Gamble replacing him.

Scunthorpe were still on top, the dangerous van Veen going close twice in the space of a minute - first bringing a good save out of Talbot with a header and then seeing a shot from the edge of the area deflected just wide of the post. …
