Captain Catts Leading by Example; 'There's No Point Encouraging Boys Then Having a Nightmare Yourself'

SUNDERLAND'S deadline-day signings can expect a crash course in their new club, Lee Cattermole has said.

Marc Wilson, Callum McManaman and Jonny Williams all joined on the stroke of Thursday's transfer deadline. Williams has been on international duty with Wales, where he did not play in either World Cup qualifier, but the other two have been at the Academy of Light.

Captain Cattermole has promised he and the other long-serving members of the club will be teaching the trio what it stands for. Leading by example is motivating the 29-yearold, who is enjoying his game more for learning about his body after injuries stopped him playing any meaningful part in last season's unsuccessful fight against relegation.

"We've got a lot of new players here (10 were signed this summer) and they have to understand what the club's about," he told Sunderland's official website.

"The more we can get the lads understanding the club and what we think it stands for and how we have Turn to Page 50 FROM BACK PAGE seen it be successful, it will only help. That's part of being a captain and just helping the lads as best you can.

"First and foremost, you've got to perform, there's no point encouraging boys off the pitch then having a nightmare yourself! That's one thing I'm trying to do at the minute."

The new faces extend beyond the playing staff but Cattermole has been impressed with how manager Simon Grayson has understood what is required at Sunderland, while teaching the Black Cats about the Championship.

"Everything he's brought to the club so far is exactly what we've needed," said the midfielder, who joined in 2009.

"He's a great fit for the job and the club and, hopefully, that will continue. It's been refreshing and that (work-rate) is what he asks for in his team and in his players as a standard level. …
