Pool Negotiations Begin; Council Sides with Community

THE council is "fully on the side of the community" as negotiations over the future of the Sarina swimming pool get under way.

While other swimming centres are opening for the spring season, Sarina pool remains closed due to a dispute between the acting principal of Sarina State High School and the Mackay Regional Council.

The pool is built on school property, despite the entrance facing the street, not the school grounds, and when it was built in the 1980s, the Sarina community raised at least half the funds needed for its construction.

The pool has previously been open to the public every day, however the acting principal now wants exclusive access to the facility during school hours.

Maintenance and upkeep cost are covered by the Mackay Regional Council.

At a Council in Community meeting held at Sarina Leagues Club on Wednesday, residents and members of the Sarina Surf Lifesaving Club voiced their concern that they would not be able to swim or train at the pool. …
