AN UPDATE version of the latest information available concerning the proposed Colton coal mine, owned by New Hope Coal, just outside Maryborough, was presented to the Mary River Catchment Co-ordinating Committee by project officer Dr Tanzi Smith.

She said that some of the information at the recently reported meeting held at Eumundi (the home base for the Great Sandy Strait support group), which was attended by nearly 200 people, has been superseded.

The proposed Colton coal mine is planned to be situated just north of Maryborough and will pump waste water into the Mary close to the junction with Hervey Bay.

Dr Smith said that sections of Hervey Bay were under a covenant offered by International Treaty protecting migratory shore birds. This is known as the Ramsar Convention, named after a town in Turkey where the first meeting to protect the birds was held.

Dr Smith said that probably the most important change had been to do with the design of proposed waste water dams and river flow to allow waste water to be put into the river

"Dam safety levels have been downgraded severely from a 1:100 year to a 1:20 year event, a hugely significant increase of the potential for damage," she said. …
