Kitchen snapshot

What Australian families are really like in the kitchen:

30-minute meals are ideal - Most commonly, Aussie families want meals that can be prepped in 30 minutes (44%).

Solo cooking - More than a third (38%) of mums cook on their own, compared to just 18% of dads.

Mealtime favourites - Spaghetti bolognaise is the main meal on the menu (75%), followed by a stir-fry (54%), a barbecue (54%) and a roast (49%).

Multiple meal prep - Two in five (42%) of Aussie mums prepare separate meals to cater for different members of the family.

The weekly meal repertoire - Half of Aussie families (49%) rotate five meals or less in the weekly menu.

Cooking and other household chores - 35% of mums would rather clean, do the laundry, vacuum or iron than cook for their families.

LACK of inspiration, motivation and time are the biggest barriers for busy Aussie mums when it comes to the daily task of feeding their families.

New research has found almost two thirds of Australian mothers (64%) lack the time or are fed up with meal preparation, with a third of mums (35%) admitting they would rather clean, do the laundry, vacuum or iron than cook for their families.

Mums also complained of having to cook multiple meals each night to satisfy a range of family preferences (42%), and of having to cook on their own, with more than a third (38%) saying they get no help when it comes to putting a meal on the table each night.

"We all want to be better cooks and create meals like those we see on TV or in our social media feeds but that's not the reality for most Australian parents," chef Miguel Maestre said.

"At the end of the day, after working, picking the kids up from school or soccer practice, and doing the shopping, often the last thing you feel like is spending hours in the kitchen, trying to cook dishes that the whole family will eat. We get stuck making the same old dishes on rotation but it doesn't have to be this way," he said.

Maestre has teamed up with Australian Mushrooms to help mums find the joy in meal times, with a series of chef secrets for making meals much healthier and much tastier. …
