Verdict: 4/5 stars

ROMANTIC comedies aren't exactly the flavour of the month.

It seems cinema-goers currently prefer their romance as a side serving in an action blockbuster or superhero jaunt, rather than as a main course.

The Big Sick, not exactly the most pleasant sounding movie title, cuts through the current cinema line-up like a hit of citrus after a rich meal.

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, the film tells the story of the Pakistan-born aspiring comedian (Kumail as himself) and grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan).

Kumail and Emily, his real-life wife, wrote the screenplay for The Big Sick, which is one reason why it feels so authentic.

What starts as a casual courtship -- with Emily telling comedian/Uber driver Kumail they 'can't keep doing this' before immediately pashing him -- turns into a lovely relationship. …
