BUSINESSES throughout the city centre have been getting into the spirit of Elton John hysteria with gaudy window displays, themed goods, and planned events for the weekend.

Mackay Music, a retailer of musical instruments and sheet music has decorated their window with various Elton-themed props, including an Elton dummy, a miniature white piano, and a selection of songbooks by the gap-toothed English crooner.

Kelly Cacciola, the store owner, said it makes sense for a music shop that sells pianos to join the Elton John bandwagon.

"We thought we'd do a window display to show that we're supporting Elton John coming to town. We sell print music, and we have a lot of Elton print music in stock, so we thought it would be fun, as we stock all sorts of pianos, keyboards, digital pianos, acoustic pianos.

"I'm going to the show, I've got corporate box tickets. I have seen Elton before, in Brisbane during the early to mid 90s, on a tour he did with Billy Joel. It was at Suncorp Stadium, so a lot more people than you'd fit here.

Ms Cacciola added that they have a miniature white digital piano in the window which they were hoping to get Elton to sign, so they could offer it as a prize.

"I'm not sure we've much chance of getting him to sign it," she added.

Menswear store Man About on Victoria St also set about dressing up their window with fittingly colourful wares.

Owner David Seymour said they had dressed the window and were playing Elton John tunes in the shop all week.

"We're doing Crocodile Rock, so we've got a crocodile with a rock, and also we're highlighting Australian designer Jimmy Stuart, that's really out there like Elton John who wears a lot of his outrageous costumes.

"We'll be open extended hours during the street party on Saturday night, we're getting into it, it's a great idea. It brings in tourism and gets people looking at Mackay and the Mackay area. Anything that highlights Mackay is a good thing.

"My favourite Elton John songs would be Candle in the Wind and Daniel. I like the oldies," Mr Seymour said. …
