TOOWOOMBA businesses are learning how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is bringing significant growth and economic opportunity to the region as the disability sector moves to a market driven by customer needs and demand.

Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Jo Sheppard said the scheme was estimated to support around 7000 people with disability and create more than 1000 new jobs to service this new consumer group.

So what does this mean for the business community in Toowoomba?

"It means lots of real opportunities," Jo said.

"There is a real opportunity for existing providers but also for new providers to step up and deliver a quality service to people living with a disability in our community," she said.

"There are business opportunities for providers large and small, for start - ups and for sole traders alike to think outside the box and in doing so, add considerable value to people's lives."

Underpinned by the concept of self-determination, the NDIS scheme will enable people with a disability to not only choose the type of services they need but also choose their own care providers. …
