Toy Store Safe from Bankruptcy as New Jobs Announced

RETAIL giant Toys R Us says its workers on Teesside will not be affected by the company's bankruptcy filing in the US - as it prepares to open one of four new stores in Sunderland and take on extra Christmas staff.

The news will reassure UK workers, including 42 at its Teesside Park branch, after the company admitted last week its business in the US and Canada was struggling with huge debts and fierce online competition.

Toys R Us Teesside is also recruiting more staff over the busy Christmas period.

The Sunderland branch at the Bridges shopping centre is one of four "pop-up" stores the chain is launching in the UK before Christmas.

A spokesperson for the retailer said: "Toys R Us stores in the UK are not included in the Toys R Us Chapter 11 proceedings that is affecting Toys R Us stores in the US and Canada. Our stores and website in the UK are open for business as usual. …
