Wells Fargo Center Could Reopen Soon; but Some Tenants Looking for Properties Elsewhere

The lights have been turned back on at one of largest buildings in Jacksonville's downtown. But the Wells Fargo Center remains closed and some of its tenants are starting to find offices elsewhere.

The Pajcic & Pajcic law firm has moved two blocks west to One Enterprise Center. A spokesman for title tenant Wells Fargo said the bank is still finalizing plans for most of its 400 employees who work in the building. But about 100 of them will start working Thursday in the bank's Metro Square location on Philips Highway.

Some tenants have moved into Executive Suite Professionals' space in the EverBank Center, and more are still looking.

And there's still no official word from Banyan Street Capital, the building's owner, about when it might reopen, although an email to tenants said it could reopen soon.

"There has been outside speculation through sources beyond our control that we are potentially months away from occupancy," said the email from Jane Reischman, the senior property manager who has not responded to the Times-Union's requests for information. "Rest assured this is not the case. Crews are currently working to restore all building systems to all portions of the building. We are optimistic that we could be within days of reopening the building."

Otherwise, tenants have been in the dark about the 37-story tower that has sat at the foot of the Main Street Bridge for more than 40 years.

"The only thing we know is that it's pretty damaged," said Seth Pajcic, an attorney with Pajcic & Pajcic, which has occupied the 19th floor at the Wells Fargo Center. "But when you see people there in hazmat suits, that's not good."

The Pajcic firm has been in the building since about 1980, he said. The law firm has 47 employees.

"We were lucky enough to find a furnished office," he said. …
