Checkmate to Vale, as Magpies Are Grounded

NEWCASTLE United will require an away win at Oldham Athletic in their final Group D game in the Checkatrade Trophy after going down 1-0 against Port Vale.

The Magpies were poor in the first half an hour against the Valiants but their improved second-half display wasn't enough to claw anything out of this clash in the Potteries.

Poor finishing plus the performance of Derby County goalkeeper Kelle Roos - on loan at Port Vale - dented any hope of a comeback for Peter Beardsley's side.

Port Vale had the first attempt at goal after just four minutes when James Gibbons flashed a shot wide.

There were half-chances for both Marcus Harness and Adam Yates as the home side asked a few early questions of the United back four.

Joe Davis then tested United but his header was cleared and on 20 minutes there was another effort from Nathan Smith.

But the goal Port Vale had threatened arrived seconds later as Gibbons' pinpoint cross found the head of Tyrone Barnett who stooped low to beat Harker and open the scores.

Newcastle struggled in the opening exchanges and failed to get a grip of the game - they seemed intimidated by the side fighting relegation in League Two at times.

Roos also heaped the pressure on United with a series of thumping long balls.

On 23 minutes Ben Whitfield sent a shot whistling past the post as Vale nearly doubled their lead.

Newcastle's first sniff of goal arrived on 34 minutes after they won a corner.

Cal Smith tapped a short corner to Dan Barlaser and his cross to the back post eventually dropped for Macaulay Gillesphey but his shot was blocked.

Moments later Luke Charman belted in a fine effort from long range which Roos had to palm to safety.

Just before half-time Dan Turner's low shot was blocked by Gilesphey as Vale finished the first 45 minutes strongly. …
