IT might not always be pretty but Sunderland showed the blueprint of how they should play in the Championship at Preston, according to George Honeyman. With 10 new players for combined fees of just PS1.25m, the side is built on the values of hard work and physicality.

Against one of the Championship's early pace-setters, Sunderland produced one of their best performances under Simon Grayson to claim a 2-2 draw at Preston North End in their last game.

Honeyman, who was on the scoresheet at Deepdale, said: "I don't think we're in a position where we're playing well enough to start playing pretty football, getting it down and passing it out from the back.

"We have to try and outwork teams, pick up second ball.

"It might not be pretty at times but I think we showed at Preston it can be effective, especially with Duncan (Watmore) getting on the flick-ons and stuff.

"It's going to be effective and we just have to stick with it. …
