Bali Holiday Weaves Its Magic

IF SOMEONE had told art teacher Louise Randell three years ago that she would be making a living as a weaver, she would not have believed it.

"I would not have thought that I was orderly enough in myself, because I like sort of chaos and I am a big picture person," Ms Randell said.

With her husband Troy and her sons, she went for a holiday in Bali five years ago. The holiday would be life changing.

When the family of five realised that they had booked too much luggage for their holiday, Ms Randell had an idea.

Her children had a collection of materialistic items they did not need.

"I was threatening my children that there are people in the world that don't have anything," she said.

She sent emails to non-government organisations in Bali to see if they would take donations.

She got one response. The Kupu Kupu Foundation helps to improve lives of people with disabilities in Indonesia.

It turned out that Ms Randell's background as an art teacher was even more valuable than her donations and she was asked to donate time for an art workshop.

Ms Randell agreed and, not thinking about language barriers and lack of equipment, unknowingly embarked on her most adventurous teaching experience yet.

"They came and picked us up from where we were staying with their little school bus and delivered me to an outdoor classroom with about 25 young adults and children with varying disabilities and off I went," she said.

"I thought I would get to see the foundation first and then teach the art lesson but is was literally out of the bus and in front of students.

The workshop was to paint flowers and there were no flowers when Ms Randell arrived.

"They said 'oh that is okay, jump on this motorbike and we will take you to get some'," she said. …
