WHEN Raj Sharma arrived in Australia from his hometown near the Himalayas in India, he went straight to work.

"My older brother picked me up and I never went to the house, I went straight to the restaurant," Mr Sharma said.

"The next morning I had to get up at 7am and I wanted to sleep but he said '7am, you get up and work with me', we have a party at the Hilton.

"He didn't tell me anything when I was back home."

The business won the national Indian Restaurant of the Year award at the weekend, which Mr Sharma collected at the Brisbane City Hall, where he used to work as a waiter during his studies.

Mr Sharma now attributes much of his work ethic to his older brother. His parents sent him to pursue a good education, but he was on his own when it came to starting a business. …
