HYUNDAI has opened the order book for its new Kona model, which is the latest entrant to the fastest-growing sub compact SUV sector of the market.

It arrives in the same week as its fellow Korean contender, the Kia Stonic, lining up against the likes of the Nissan Juke and a host of others.

A further half-dozen are due here soon, which will saturate the market and should make for some stonking deals as they fight for a share of such an overcrowded market sector.

Drivers are now deserting traditional saloon, hatchback and estate cars in droves and are switching to small, medium and large SUVs, of which this new Hyundai is of the smaller variety.

Due to take to the roads from the beginning of next month, the Kona will initially be available powered by petrol engines only, with a diesel option to follow later.

Aiming for family buyers, it comes with a high level of safety kit, including driver attention alert, lane keeping assist, hill start assist control and downhill brake control on all models.

The Premium SE version adds blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert, with Premium GT specification adding autonomous emergency braking. all versions also get DAB and Bluetooth.

Prices start from PS16,195 for the 120bhp one-litre turbo six-speed manual model with 16-inch alloy wheels, driver's seat height adjustment and 60/40 split folding rear seat. The S trim level adds air conditioning with rear air vents in the centre console, automatic headlamps with LED positioning lamps and LED daytime running lamps.

Convenience features on S trim include standard cruise control with speed limiter, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and electric front and rear windows. The S has a five-inch LCD centre console display, six speakers, USB and AUX connections and steering wheel controls for the audio, telephone and cruise control operations. A driver's supervision instrument cluster with 3.5-inch LCD multi-function screen rounds off the KONA S trim level.

From PS17,495 the Kona SE manual builds on S trim adding 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and fog lamps. …
