Leading the Way; A Big Week in Indigenous Rugby League

IT'S A big week for the Mackay Indigenous community this week, with two of the biggest events on their calendar year being held over five days.

On Wednesday night a gala dinner was held for Mackay's Indigenous women in league, and to celebrate the selection of their season U17 ambassador.

Beyonce Quakawoot, from the Sapphires, was selected after impressing the judges with how she spoke about her connection to her family, origins and her aspirations of playing representative league.

Guests speakers on the night included former Jillaroo, Queensland Rugby Sevens and Indigenous All Stars player Libby Cook Black, as well as former Manly Warringah Sea Eagle's player and current Cutter Jayden Hodges.

In addition to the gala night, the Mackay Indigenous Rugby League carnival will also take place this week, kicking off from 4pm today at the Junior Rugby League fields.

Last year the Argun Warriors from Badu Island took out the comp, as well as the women's CVM memorial team. …
