NEWCASTLE United are sweating on the fitness of Mikel Merino ahead of Saturday's home clash with AFC Bournemouth.

The Magpies went into battle against Burnley without the Spaniard, who was missing with a back injury and was back on Tyneside being assessed by medics.

It is safe to say Newcastle missed him on a bad night at Turf Moor, United slipping down to ninth place after their 1-0 loss.

Benitez said: "We have to wait. Merino will see the specialist and see how he feels.

"We need to wait a couple of days and be sure we have the right decision for him."

Newcastle lost the game after Ayoze Perez lost the ball and when asked if the former Tenerife man should have been handed a freekick, the Toon chief said: "I have a lot of claims but maybe not that one.

"It does not matter, it will not change anything."

The loss was United's 12th from the last 16 Premier League away matches.

Benitez wants Newcastle United to quickly move on from their deeply disappointing defeat at Turf Moor. …
