HE'S used to dealing with slippery characters in Parliament, but Simon Clarke got his hands on a real reptile at the opening of a new college.

The Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP officially unveiled the Askham Bryan College Campus, in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.

It follows a PS3.5m transformation of Marton Hall's former Victorian stable block into a 21st century learning centre.

At the opening, Mr Clarke got to grips with his anguine namesake Simon the skink as well as speaking to students and staff.

The educational centre brings together students from across Teesside and beyond to study a range of further education subjects, including animal management, equine and foundation learning courses.

Catherine Dixon, chief executive of Askham Bryan College, said: "Our new Middlesbrough campus provides vibrant state-of-the-art facilities for young people, enabling them to develop their work and life skills and lead successful careers doing what they want to do. …
