RACING: Two-time Group 1 winner Hartnell may be the forgotten horse of this year's Melbourne Cup but a couple of punters have not forgotten how good Godolphin's only runner in the great race could be.

The seven-year-old, which ran third in last year's Cup and 15th in 2015, has got the "slows" among many after failing to follow up his first-up PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) win at Caulfield in August in three Group 1 starts that followed.

Rated the second best horse in the country behind Winx when the spring began, Hartnell ran second twice, behind second Cup favourite Humidor ($9) in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Bonneval in the Underwood Stakes (1800m), before a muddling ninth of just 11 runners in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on October 14.

But trainer James Cummings, grandson of 12-time Melbourne Cup winner Bart Cummings, resisted the temptation to squeeze in another run before Hartnell, which has blown out to $26 in Cup betting, carries the top weight of 57. …
