FAMILIES with disabled children were given a special half-term treat by intu Eldon Square. Eldon Leisure donated four bowling lanes for some 'Sunshine Families' to enjoy quality time together without a care in the world. The shopping centre often work closely with The Sunshine Fund, a charity which dedicates its time to helping local disabled children and buying specialist equipment they really need. The newly refurbished bowling alley and soft play area have been designed to be even more accommodating and accessible to families with special needs. The bowling alley is a smaller venue, making it ideal for children and adults who might otherwise find a large, noisy environment quite stressful. It is also all on one level, meaning wheelchair users can fully access and get involved with the activity. Eight families who have been helped by the Sunshine Fund were treated to the spooky Halloween-themed party and loved every minute. Rachel Kaczmar, the fund's family liaison officer, said: "We want to say a huge thank you to the team at Eldon Leisure for welcoming our families. "It's so important that there are opportunities for families to have fun all together, it really means the world when we are welcomed so warmly by organisations. g"The families all had a fantastic time - the smiles on their faces were so lovely to see. "What made it so special was that every single child was able to take part alongside their friends and siblings." Bev Wright, whose daughter Freya was part of the fund's Go Bananas appeal in June, said: "We had a wonderful time bowling, the kids played, socialised, helped and cheered each other on, it was lovely to see. "It was a great opportunity to get together with other families and give our kids a really fun experience in an environment that wasn't too busy or too overwhelming. "The leisure staff were really helpful and as always the wonderful team from the sunshine fund were amazing and brought the Halloween spirit with them."
