Need to 'Knuckle Down'; Side Urged to Show More Grit

CRICKET: The Scorchers will need to "knuckle down" at the crease if they are to bounce back from a crushing defeat according to a team veteran.

The Coast suffered an outright loss to Valley on Saturday after failing to make inroads with the bat.

Despite a solid effort from Peter Dein (78), the Scorchers were bowled out for 198, which gifted Valley the opportunity to return to the crease and bat for an outright victory chasing only 33 runs.

Valley achieved the target easily in seven overs to claim maximum points from the clash.

Dein, who has been playing in the state's first grade since 2006, said it had been a "pretty tough day".

"I'd much rather get a duck than have the boys lose outright," he said.

"Overall it's just two pretty poor batting performances we've put in back-to-back."

He said the Scorchers couldn't get a handle on the pitch at Peter Easton Oval.

"I think the batters probably didn't apply themselves as well as we can and we didn't acclimatise to the pitch conditions," he said. …
