SPORTING royalty and former Olympian Tracey Belbin believes a plan to replace Mackay Hockey Club's playing surface would be the shot in the arm the sport needs.

With the club's synthetic surface in desperate need of repair, the 1988 Olympic gold medallist said a $200,000 pledge from the Labor Government if re-elected would allow the club to attract major competitions and athletes.

"The surface is about 7-10 years old, so this is an injection in the arm for our sport, particularly with Commonwealth Games around the corner," Belbin said.

"It's important for us to keep our members safe. Mackay has always had a really good showing with Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and state players. It's a traditional sport, and a great sport for Mackay.

"So getting a new surface will put a real boost into the organisation."

Meanwhile, having their track surface crippled by damage during Cyclone Debbie, a $120,000 election pledge from Labor could bring the Palmyra Drag Racing Club's long-fought battle to seek funding for critical resurfacing work to an end. …
