Kiwi International to Coach Budding Footballers

RUGBY LEAGUE: Rugby league international Steve Matai will be in Clifton tomorrow to pass on some helpful hints to budding players.

Matai is a close friend of new Wattles player-coach Travis Burns and they were both at Manly when Burns debuted in the NRL.

The pair and their helpers will put on a free junior rugby league coaching clinic at 2.30-4.30pm tomorrow at Platz Oval as a forerunner to the Wattles Rodeo.

Burns played 127 games in the NRL and 75 in Super League in England while Matai played 10 Tests for New Zealand and 230 NRL games for Manly.

Matai kicked two goals in the 2008 40-0 Manly win against Melbourne in the NRL grand final and was also in the 2011 grand final win.

He retired at the start of this season due to a neck injury.

Burns started his senior footy career at Wattles and will return next season as player coach. …
