NORTHUMBERLAND Schools' under-16 girls' team romped to a 9-1 victory over Cleveland.

Both teams started the game well - but on 13 minutes Northumberland took the lead.

A great touch from Alicia Mutrie on the halfway line sent Erin Nelson on a mazy run down the left and she cut inside to score through the legs of the Cleveland goalkeeper.

Ella Metcalfe then made a fingertip save to her left to stop Cleveland levelling.

However, Cleveland did equalise from the resulting corner.

The game was tight for the next 10 minutes, both teams retaining the ball well until Katie Archbold slid a perfectly-timed pass between the Cleveland centre-half and left-back for Anna Soulsby to cut in and slide the ball into the net.

Another brilliant run from Nelson down the left and a pinpoint leftfooted cross created another chance for Soulsby, who notched with a fierce backpost header to make the half-time score 3-1.

Northumberland started the second period the way they had ended the first, Soulsby slipping in Nelson for 4-1. …
