I DON'T think Alan Shearer, the former Newcastle United star centre forward is Kevin Dishman's flavour of the month.

As a TV pundit etc, Dishman would prefer Shearer to shut up, and also feels Peter Beardsley should have been given a statue outside St James' Park instead of Shearer!

To put the record straight, as a first class player Shearer more than merits the statue - commissioned by the late Freddie Shepherd - which proudly stands outside SJP.

Beardsley was a little wizard with the ball at his feet, and jinked through opposing defences to both lay on, and score goals.

He reminded me of George Eastham, the magical inside forward from the 50s, who supplied ammunition for Len White - another great centre forward - to fire home some cracking goals. Beardsley did likewise, but only scored 119 times to Shearer's record 206.

Most of Shearer's prowess on the park has been well documented, but now he commands a nationwide presence with his commentaries for the BBC, where he occupies prime position as a pundit for Match of the Day. …
