Teams Go to Dizzying Heights; Mackay Performers Have Plenty to Cheer About

FROM little things big things grow, and that is certainly the case for Adrenalin Cheer & Dance, who'll be taking 15 teams to Melbourne for the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) 2017 National Cheer 7 Dance Championships this week.

Run over three days, the Mackay dance group will take on Australia's best in age groups seven to adults, in cheer, hip hop, poms, road stunts and duo categories.

While they've had plenty to cheer about after securing multiple national titles, competing for Australia on the world stage in Hawaii, and six overseas competitions, the little group that could is used to reaching great heights after starting from scratch.

Starting out with about eight students a decade ago following the vision of owner Kelly Tandy, Adrenalin has now grown into a fully-fledged dance hub, with some 10 coaches and seven-day-a-week training sessions.

"I used to run a modelling and promotions agency with my sister. We used to get hired by the likes of Bundaberg Rum and XXXX, and they wanted to hire dancing girls," Tandy said.

"So we put a cheerleading team together of models, and we didn't want to do just the shake the pom pom thing, we wanted to do it our way.

"So we started self-learning, self-teaching, doing a few courses and clinics with coaches, learning basics... from there I went and watched a national champs (2006), and from then on, the second I was there sitting in the crowd watching what could be achieved, it was 100% 'this is what I wanted to do'.

"I started doing formal qualifications. We closed down the modelling agency and I started a competitive cheer and dance school from that point."

Taking on Australia's best in Melbourne, Tandy said the group had teams defending six to seven national titles from last year, but also had teams new to categories. …
