A BIZARRE old building that has sat vacant for years in one of the less appealing parts of Mackay has the potential to house dozens of people.

The old Queensland Rail dormitory in Boddington St will go to auction in the week before Christmas, just a couple of months after a Mackay lawyer purchased it.

When Mark McGrath bought it in September he couldn't believe what was inside, or that he had managed to buy it for $452,100.

With 38 bedrooms, six bathrooms, three kitchens and four dining area, it's one of the strangest buildings in Mackay.

"I think it was a good buy. It is just incredible once you see what is inside it, I can't believe it didn't go for twice what I paid," Mr McGrath said.

"It is 400m from the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre and 200m from the primary school.

"I think it is a shame Aurizon had it sitting vacant."

He said there were working kitchens, fridges and televisions inside the pale blue building. …
