CRACKER, the racing greyhound, is coming out of retirement to star in a charity's Santa Run.

The Butterwick Hospice stages its annual Santa Run at Hardwick Country Park, near Sedgefield, at 10.30am on Sunday, December 3. And this year's fundraising run features a Santa Dog Event with Cracker being given an honorary place in the line-up in recognition of his festive name and in a bid to find him a loving home for Christmas.

Three-year-old Cracker, who ran in 15 races and won three times, is the latest inmate with the Greyhound Trust Darlington, based at Merrybent.

Janet Brass, who has dedicated her life to looking after retired greyhounds, said: "Cracker is a gentle giant with a lovely nature. He also has the perfect name for Christmas so, hopefully, taking part in the Butterwick's Santa Run will put him in the public eye and help him find a good home."

The Santa Dog Run sets off 10 minutes after the main event, with "Santa's little yelpers" all receiving a commemorative bone-shaped collar tag and treat. …
