GOLF: Former world No.1 Jason Day is well poised for a run at the Stonehaven Cup after firing a birdie-filled first round at the Australian Open tournament.

Day lived up to the hype in his long-awaited Australian Open return, posting a five-under-par 66 in perfect morning conditions at The Australian Golf Club yesterday.

A nasty double-bogey on his penultimate hole however robbed him of the clubhouse lead with Sydney young gun Cameron Davis having carded a sizzling eight-under-par 63 to lead the way early.

Defending champion Jordan Speith finished on -1 after a difficult start which saw him bogey his first two holes.

Day, playing in Australia for the first time in four years paid tribute to the big gallery that flocked to see him.

"It was amazing actually, the support that we had here today," he said. …
