KEENAN Hauber is six months into his learner's permit, but unlike most teenagers, is not rushing to get behind the wheel.

He is aware of the dangers on the roads and how important experience and confidence is to safe driving.

"I think it is important to only go for your test when you are ready. Continue to train instead of going out on your own," Keenan said.

"I'm halfway through my learner's permit and found that locating other cars when merging between lanes is difficult."

Research done by the University of the Sunshine Coast has shown that P-platers are the most at risk drivers on the road.

Dr Bridie Scott-Parker's research found that adolescent drivers were still developing their situation awareness skills.

Her research compared young driver behaviour in Australia with other parts of the world.

"We have focused on distraction and ways to build skills before they get that red P-plate," Dr Scott-Parker said. …
