CENTRAL Districts have endured something of a luckless Harding-Madsen Shield campaign, but coach Scott Barrett still harboured hope it could end positively.

Retaining just four players from last season's title-winning team, Barrett admitted even before a ball was bowled it would be difficult to replicate the feats of 2016-17.

Compounding the coach's selection headaches has been an inability to field a regular starting XI.

Coupled with washouts of key winnable fixtures and losses coming only to the top three sides in the competition - including a coin flip defeat to Met-East - and you can understand why he may feel hard done by.

With one game to play before the semi-finals, Centrals are still in the semi-final hunt, behind fourth-placed South East Redbacks.

"We probably need to find a bonus point win somewhere, and if we can do that we give ourselves a chance," Barrett said.

"If we win and a few things go our way, it's realistic that we can scrape in.

"That would be great if we can do that, but winning the game first and foremost is what's most important."

Defeating University at home today is the major goal for the boys based at Mark Marsh Oval with the match involving third-placed Metropolitan East called off yesterday. …
