Hospital Staff Stop Work; Call for More Wardsmen, Cleaners

STAFF at Lismore Base Hospital stopped work to rally yesterday over what they say is a "workplace safety issue".

Cleaners, wardspersons, radiographers, security guards, allied health workers, administrative staff, maintenance workers and other hospital workers walked off the job.

Unions NSW secretary Mark Morey shouted to the gathering of about 40 staff: "It is no longer good enough to say you have to go 120 per cent.

"Why should you be put under enormous pressure to be running around, chasing after things when you know you haven't got enough staff here. It is now a workplace safety issue."

Health Services Union Public Health division organiser Peter Kelly said staff had been meeting with management over the past few months trying to increase numbers in the cleaning and wardsperson department.

"Management are failing to listen to what our demands are and are giving us far worse offers of staffing," Mr Kelly said. …
