Trump Faces Fury from Native Americans as He Slashes National Parks

DONALD TRUMP is facing lawsuits from Native American groups and environmentalists after he slashed the size of two national monuments in Utah in the biggest rollback of public land safeguards in US history.

"Some people think that the natural resources of Utah should be controlled by a small handful of very distant bureaucrats located in Washington.

And guess what? They're wrong," Mr Trump said in Salt Lake City, the state's capital, last night.

He later signed two declarations, one reducing by 80 per cent the size of the 1.3-million-acre Bears Ears National Monument, created by Barack Obama, and the other cutting by nearly half the 1.9-million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It was designated by Bill Clinton.

The restructuring is seen as a victory for fossil fuel industries and ranchers and has been praised by developers.

Within hours of the declarations, environmentalists filed a legal action to have the decision reversed through the courts. The Natural Resources Defense Council, the Centre for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club and other environmental groups sued in federal court in Washington. …
