Sailboarder Lea Finally Joins International Youth Ranks

THE day has finally arrived for Hailey Lea to step into the international arena when racing in the Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China, starts on Monday.

She will be armed with a vial of ocean water from Mooloolaba Beach which Hailey will add to those collected by the other members of the Australian youth sailing team for the traditional Joining of the Waters ceremony.

The experience of racing at this level in a completely unknown environment will be a great test for this confident and very capable school student.

The Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club member has been working on her fitness and developing skills to successfully race the RS:X sailboard against the world's best youth sailors.

The opportunities for Hailey to race in top-level competition have been limited in Australia.

Her final event before heading to China was last week's Sail Melbourne where she finished fourth in six-board fleet.

Hailey will be in a tough fleet of 18 other young women including Britain's Emma Wilson who finished second in 2015 and won in 2016. …
