Stepfather Taped Girl in Shower; Guilty of Indecently Treating Child

A YOUNG woman secretly recorded showering by her stepfather as a teen begged a judge to protect her.

Her mother pleaded for her ex-husband, a man aged in his mid-30s, to serve out a full sentence for indecent treatment of a child.

But their victim impact statements, tendered to Mackay District Court, were dismissed as "very extreme" by Judge Julie Dick.

She said her powers were limited.

"She's asking me to make her safe for the rest of her life. I am not a security guard," Judge Dick said.

"She says 'he's a bad, disgusting person and if you give him the chance I have no doubt in my mind he will do horrible things'.

"She feels like 'helpless prey' and doesn't want him to 'hunt her down'. This should be redacted. It puts unnecessary pressure on the judge."

However, Judge Dick determined there were "exceptional circumstances" and the man walked free.

The Mackay man, who had no criminal history, faced court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to indecent treatment of a child under 16 as a guardian some time between February, 2011 and September, 2013. …
