FOR 50 years Mackay Meals on Wheels has been providing food, conversation and care to the region's elderly and disabled.

The group has come far in its five decades, starting from a committee of 12, delivering just a few meals to now a strong base of 180 volunteers delivering 1300 meals a week to 300 clients.

The group was formed in 1967 by the deputy lord mayor at the time Minnie Struthers, helped by senator Ian Wood.

According to committee president Tony Charlesworth, the two were the driving force that brought the first Meals on Wheels to town, after Ms Struthers saw a huge need for it in the community.

"They began it and now it has just grown and grown. The need for it has only gotten bigger as well," he said.

"It is such a necessary group because often our volunteers go out and they will more than likely be the only visit to our clients that they have that day, the only human interaction.
