Cricket: A line in the sand moment has Brothers Cricket Club on the verge of a rare DBCT Poole Cup finals appearance.

Full of confidence after three consecutive wins to end the one-day schedule, and strong performances in rain-affected two-day game draws over the last month, Brothers find themselves one game clear in third.

With three matches to go, including a season-defining clash against fourth-placed Pioneer Valley beginning at Harrup Park today, a win would rocket the rejuvenated club two games clear in the race for a finals spot.

Knowing the importance of the match, captain Michael Comerford said his side's approach wouldn't be dictated by the toss.

On the back of defeating Valley by 12 runs in a tight contest, Comerford was confident his batsmen would rectify a batting collapse that almost cost them the game, and was comfortable his bowling attack could get the job done.

"If we can capitalise on a good top order start and build solid partnerships, we'll be in a much better position than last time," Comerford said.

"But our bowlers have been a strong point, we don't have any quicks that would be striking fear, but they've got brilliant control. So as a captain, setting fields and plans is something I am able to do. It's a pretty crucial match where the ladder is sitting, so it'd be great going into Christmas by extending that gap."

Comerford's confidence levels heading into the match are a stark contrast to what was emanating from the club in seasons past.

After their last finals appearance in the 2011/12 season, Brothers recorded back-to-back wooden spoons in seasons 2012/13 and 13/14, two fourths in 2014/15 and 15/16, followed by a fifth finish last season in a long period of under-achievement.

Comerford said there was no secret to the mediocrity, with the results almost "expected". …
